Craig Counsell is a hometown favorite for your Milwaukee Brewers. Under classey athletes in the dictionary, you’ll see his name. It’s really hard to root against him as he obviously has had to work harder than the next guy to even achieve the things he’s done in MLB. Craig Counsell has had a long, productive career and many teams have had the honor of having his presence in the clubhouse.
Yesterday was Craig Counsell bobblehead day at Miller Park. One would seem to expect the stars to align and Craig would possibly produce the game winning hit or God forbid sock a home-run. But Craig went 0-3 with 3 strikeouts. Still, the crowd cheered everytime he came to bat.
In 126 AB’s in 2011, Counsell sits with an average of .151 with zero home-runs and 4 RBI’s. He definitely plays above average defense but his bat is currently an automatic out for the Brewers. Yes, it’s literally an automatic out as Craig finally ended an 0-45 slump as recent as last week.
With a team in the middle of a playoff berth and trying to secure their first NL division title, changes have to be made. Sure, maybe he sticks around as a defensive replacement late in games but to send him up to homeplate with a bat in hand is simply foolishness at this point. I’m 100% confident we can find a better bat on the bench or sitting in Nashville. Mat Gamel anyone, Taylor Green?
As I said earlier, this point may be mute upon the return of Weeks and even more so when September call-ups happen. But in the meantime, thanks Craig for all you’ve done for Milwaukee and the example you’ve set for kids across the country. But now it’s time to take a seat and let the game pass you by.
